I have atttempted to make a head board before, and while it worked out it was not exactly how i imagined it. So this time around, I took some time to plan and made sure to get 50% JoAnns coupons before heading out on my adventure. With the delivery of my new "real" bed aka a mattress, box spring and frame I felt it was now time to dive into another round of DIY fun. We finished painting a while back and the real reason I had to get rid of the grey walls is because all my bedding is grey and white. So here is some photos from the hour long process it took on putting the new bedroom addition together.
First- the fabirc. I wanted something with good texture and that wouldnt stretch out over time. I choose a the same dark grey flet that I'd used to re-cover a chair (more on that in a moment) and found it on sale for $4 a yard. I picked up 2 yards. Then there was the backing board, the previous head board I'd made was out of plywood and it weighed a TON. I opted for a 1/4" thick paper board via the home depot that I had cut down to the right size. It's a little more flexible than I initially liked but I added a frame to the back via 2x1" pine pieces also cut down to size. Home depot's total was $12 for the board, and pine. The foam was from JoAnn's too, it's the green stuff they have hidden in the back of the store. I went with 2" thick and 66" length. Since my queen size bed is 60" I wanted just a bit of overhang on the sides. In comes the first 50% and it was then only $27- easily the most expensive part of the entire process. I picked up quilt batting too since I knew I wanted it to wrap around the hard corners of the board for $12. Total cost: $59. Not too bad at all! My inspiration for the head board is from West Elm and it runs at $449 for the queen size, YUCK. Here is a photo of it though:
Alright here are the photos of my process. Since I already have a staple gun from previous projects, plus an assortment of screws I did not have to purchase the hard ware this time around.
Supplies: Note the white board looking thing was much bigger than the foam, I decided to cut it down to size after bringing it home.
Here is the green foam wrapped in 2 layers of batting (queen size batting meant I could double it up)
And now the fun part! I wrapped the grey fabric around and stapled it to the back too:
I then took the 4' length 1x2" pine pieces and screwed them into the back of the board. I measured it so that the head board sits about an inch and a half above the mattress itself just so that I have room to still feed my phone charger through it :) Since it's my alarm clock I've got to keep it close by. Here it is all set up!
A few more house projects that have been happening are that I made the curtains in my room. I had them initally on my closet but traded them out once they were hung up. They were made out of an old Ikea duvet cover I had but never used anymore and are a great compliment to the teal across the room in a rich purple. I added the extra pannel peices from the original curtains too that are now over the closet:
This next weeks project is to clean off my desk that is on the other side of the room. It's a mess of books, papers and half empty boxes still.
Signed,
Ishi
